metal filling

When you think of going to the dentist, you probably think about dreaded cavities and fillings. Most of us have had to undergo this procedure. Thanks to modern technology, dental fillings are a lot better than they used to be. They’re safer, easier to place, and even better looking. Let’s take a closer look at the history of fillings, and how far they have come.

Amalgam Fillings

When fillings first became popular in the 1800s, they were made of amalgam – a mix of metals including silver and mercury. This was not free mercury, meaning it had a very small risk of entering a patient’s system, but there were still health concerns. Another concern with metal fillings is that they require extra tooth matter to be removed to make room. However, amalgam fillings have been known to be quite durable.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

These days, your dentist will typically use a composite resin material to fill your cavities. These fillings can be custom shaded to match the color of your tooth. They are often indistinguishable from the rest of your tooth. In addition, less of the tooth has to removed to make room.

Besides composite, some dentists use porcelain or ceramic fillings. These materials are more resistant to staining, so they stay white for a longer period of time. However, ceramic can be abrasive if the filling is in an area where the tongue will frequently brush up against it. Porcelain, as well as ceramic and composite, is also more expensive and less durable than metal fillings.

Laser Dentistry

Some people are terrified of fillings because they understandably hate the sound and sensation of a drill. If this sounds like you, ask your dentist about using laser dentistry instead. Your dentist can prepare your tooth for a filling by using lasers to dispense of the decayed areas of your tooth. There is no sound or feeling of a drill, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

Fillings have come a long way since the days when metal was the only option. If you think you have a filling, ask your dentist about treatment options today.
