With implant dentures in Jacksonville, you can expect far greater benefits than with traditional dentures. Traditional prosthetics may provide some level of boosted confidence because of how they replicate the look of a smile; however, their functionality often leaves much to be desired. At Jacksonville Complete Dentistry, Dr. Barker is our in-house prosthodontist who has decades of experience helping patients enjoy healthier, longer-lasting smiles. Completing his residency training in prosthodontics in Bethesda, MD, he eventually transferred to the National Naval Dental Center to serve as a staff prosthodontist. As a Diplomate member of the American College of Prosthodontics and fellow of the American Board of Prosthodontics, he is always looking for updated information and ways to provide dental implants to patients suffering from tooth loss. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with a member of our team and learn more about your future with implant dentures.

What Are Implant Dentures?

Upper implant denture in Jacksonville

Implant dentures in Jacksonville are a unique alternative to traditional dentures for patients living with an entire arch of missing teeth. Designed to replace the top or bottom row of teeth, these permanent prosthetics are held in place using between 4 and 8 titanium posts. Surgically placed into the jawbone, they create a firm foundation for your longer-lasting, life-changing smile.

Of course, when choosing this method of tooth replacement, you will learn during your initial consultation with Dr. Barker about the two types of dentures you can choose from: fixed or removable.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

As a hybrid prosthesis, a fixed implant denture can only be removed by an implant dentist in Jacksonville. Held in place by 4-8 dental implants, it is secured over the tops of your implants and functions just like regular teeth. This means you can easily brush and care for your teeth without using special cleaning solutions or having to take them out at bedtime.

Removable Implant Dentures

Often referred to as “Snap-On dentures,” these removable prosthetics require only 2-5 dental implants and less jawbone density. As a removable denture, you can easily take it out to clean before going to bed at night. Also, they are held in place using a bar- or ball-retained device that makes it easy to remove if necessary.

The Implant Denture Process

With an in-house prosthodontist on staff at Jacksonville Complete Dentistry, we are pleased to provide the entire dental implant placement from start to finish in our dental office. Although it does take much longer than if you were to receive traditional prosthetics, the benefits and results you’ll experience are far greater. Not to mention, every patient who receives dental implants of any kind must go through the same process:

  • Initial Consultation: This requires meeting with us to discuss whether you need preliminary treatment or are free to move onto your dental implant surgery. If you have signs of gum disease or jawbone deterioration, we will recommend periodontal therapy or bone grafting before moving forward with treatment.
  • Dental Implant Surgery: This requires undergoing local anesthesia to numb your mouth before making a few small incisions in your gums to place each implant into its designated spot. After closing the gum tissue, you will be instructed to return home to recover.
  • Osseointegration/Abutment: You will spend 3-6 months healing at home before returning to have metal abutments put into place over the tops of your dental implants.
  • Final Restoration Placement: Depending on the type of denture you choose, we will secure your new teeth in place, allowing you to start enjoying your new smile.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Although it may be hard to believe, implant dentures are actually possible for most adult patients. These permanent solutions make it possible for you to enjoy many of the most common tasks performed each day. When meeting with Dr. Barker to discuss your eligibility, he will survey your oral cavity and ask about your oral health to choose as to how we should move forward:

  • He will look at your oral health to see if you need periodontal therapy or tooth extraction to address any potential problems that could lead to implant failure later on.
  • He will address your overall health to make sure you’re healthy enough to undergo minor oral surgery.
  • He will determine if you have enough jawbone to adequately support your implants and future denture. If not, you’ll need to undergo a bone graft.
