According to a 2012 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 65 million adults had mild, moderate or severe periodontitis from 2009 to 2010, which is the more advanced form of gum disease.

The Main Factors That Influence Gum Disease Risk

It’s important to note that there are several risk factors for gum disease that most people aren’t aware of. Some of these factors are based on genetics, with 30 percent of the population being inherently more susceptible to gum disease than not, despite their oral care habits. How to Prevent Gum Disease

To keep gum disease at bay, it’s incredibly important to commit to habits that promote healthy gums. These habits include:

  • Brushing twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste (minimum of two minutes)
  • Flossing daily
  • Visiting the dentist every six months for a thorough cleaning (dentists can reach areas that over-the-counter products cannot)
  • Eating a diet that promotes healthy gums (i.e. onions, leafy greens, green tea, peppers, citrus fruits, milk, yogurt, cheese, celery, carrots, apples, etc.)

The Signs of Gum Disease

In between your routine dental visits, it’s crucial that you perform a self-exam at least once a day, typically after you finish brushing and flossing your teeth.
