Of all the fashion trends that could have made it big in 2020, it’s doubtful anyone could predict the face mask to top the list. As one of the most common forms of personal protective equipment (PPE), it has become a staple when seen out in public. While this is a new occurrence for those working outside the field of medicine and dentistry, it along with gloves, disposable gowns, and protective eyewear are the “norm” for a majority of healthcare workers. So why are these PPE so important, especially inside a dental practice? Your dentist in Jacksonville invites you to spend a few minutes learning more about this dental safety protocol that is keeping everyone healthy.

Why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is Important

Dental offices are known for being some of the cleanest places you can visit right now. Not only is it because they must maintain strict sanitation guidelines, but your dentist and team members must operate in close proximity to patients. For this reason alone, it is vital for dental professionals to protect themselves as well as those they treat from potentially transmitting anything that could result in serious illness.

Many dentists must perform aerosol-generating procedures with air/water syringes, dental handpieces, or ultrasonic scalers. As a result, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention states that the COVID-19 virus can “persist in aerosols for hours” as well as on some surfaces for multiple days. This is why it is recommended that dentists avoid these types of procedures if at all possible. Unfortunately, this is simply not feasible at times.

So what are they doing to keep everyone safe from harmful pathogens? Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

What 4 PPE Are Most Commonly Found in Dentist Offices?

The next time you arrive for a dental appointment, don’t be surprised to see your dentist and dental team members wearing some or all of the following PPE:

  • Gloves
  • Protective Eyewear
  • Disposable Gowns
  • Face Masks/Face Shields

Depending on the individual’s role within the dental office, a front desk person may only be required to wear a face mask while your hygienist will likely be donning all of the above, as will your dentist.

Even though it may appear impersonal or unwelcoming, these safety measures are necessary during this time. Although you may be uncertain as to whether or not your dentist is smiling underneath all those added layers, you can be sure that no matter how much PPE is worn, they will continue to provide the most compassionate, high-quality dental care every time you visit.
