man in the dental chairThere are two primary reasons people avoid the dentist: they are either afraid of having their teeth looked at or they think they can save money by waiting just a little bit longer to go. Do either of those sound familiar? If so, you may not realize that prolonging those checkups and cleanings may just end up putting you in more discomfort and costing more over the long term. Keep reading to learn more about the importance of routine preventive care — and why it’s never too late to recommit to your oral health!

Prevention Is Key for Oral Health

Remember the adage from childhood — that it’s easier to prevent a problem than to fix one afterward? The same is still true when it comes to your teeth. Cavities, gum disease, and most other oral health hazards are completely preventable when you put in a little effort. However, these risks are greater as you age, which means routine preventive care is more important with each year that passes by. Ignoring your oral hygiene practices can lead to painful toothaches and decay, irreversible gum disease, and other serious issues.

What to Expect from a Checkup and Cleaning

A checkup and cleaning usually won’t take more than an hour, but it may be a little longer if it has been a while since you last visited the dentist. During the cleaning portion, your hygienist will thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and around the gums. They will also monitor pockets that could indicate gum disease, measuring these spaces and evaluating whether or not you need gum disease treatment.

When it’s time for the exam, your dentist will come in and evaluate each of your teeth. They will have an eye out for cavities, faulty dental work, and other irregularities. If X-rays have been taken, these will also be evaluated for evidence of extra teeth beneath the gum line, decay between teeth, and other potential issues.

If your dentist detects a problem during the exam, the team will put together a treatment plan and schedule a time for you to come back to renew your oral health as soon as possible.

It’s Never too Late to Get Back on Track

Maybe it’s been a little while since you visited the dentist, or maybe it’s been a good long while. Either way, it is never too late to renew your commitment to your oral health. A professional dental team will welcome you with open arms no matter how long it’s been, pleased that you are taking the right steps for your lasting smile right now! Any time is the right time to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
